Boundaries
Why they matter.
I once told a therapist about my childhood and at the end he asked how it was possible for me to have a relationship with either of my folks. I smiled, feeling smug with my capacity for forgiveness as I replied, they were young and we all make mistakes.
Here is where I was grossly wrong.
Me forgiving them put the onus back on me. I hadn’t cleared that within myself and so the forgiving part was actually an act of self flagellation. As in, I must have deserved all the bad things. It’s my fault, not theirs.
As a practitioner, I passionately hold the pole that no child is ever at fault for any abuse they endure.
For myself, I have been less passionate.
I have had sloppy boundaries and nothing is showing this more clearly to me than being truly loved in my partnership.
Noticing where I don’t value my own time and resources. Where I abandon myself in the name of making it easy for someone else because I can handle it.
Or I don’t want to hurt someone’s feelings.
Here is what I have learned by not having boundaries
-I gather resentment by not being honest about my own limits
-I still hurt peoples feelings
-I lean into the either/or poles
-I miss the intimacy in any relationship built with honesty
What I am learning having boundaries is,
Boundaries are not punishment, they are orientation.
They are clarity.
They are the conditions that make closeness possible.
Real intimacy requires honesty and honesty requires limits.
This isn’t about pushing people away. It’s about no longer abandoning myself to stay connected.
That is the boundary.

2016
Ten years ago.
I was a Mom to a 2 year old boy.
I was struggling in my marriage.
I was trying to build a business, figure out how to be a wife and a mother and keep a household functioning.
And I felt like I was failing at all of it except Motherhood.
We sublet our home and took a trailer through 8 states over 4 months to see if we could find another place to call home. As if that could fix us.
After 2 months, I hopped on a plane in Seattle to get away with my son. For 2 weeks I stayed with a dear friend in Colorado trying to imagine what to do with my life if I left my husband.
I can see from this vantage point that all the visions I secretly had then are what I am living now.
I can feel a lot of compassion for the woman I was then and how afraid she was to jump.
I was doing my best and that looked like trying to make everyone else happy, no matter the cost to me.
And while I blamed my husband for it at the time, it was my choice to do so.
I gave up on me. I didn’t believe in myself or my dreams enough to try.
Life will whisper at first, it will sing you a song that only you can hear. It will nudge, it will eventually push and then it will shove you right into the pit until you change something.
I was a long way from the pit, but I was on my way.
I am proud of how brave I’ve been. The courage to pursue what has felt completely insane many sleepless nights. It was a lot of effort to get up from that pit. And I’m grateful to the friends who reached their hands down to me and raised me up.
While I do feel an ache when looking at these images, I can forgive myself for not knowing what I didn’t know.  And 4 years later, I would jump.
To anyone wondering if they can, whether that be to leave a crap marriage, or launch a business or do both at the same time, I’m living proof. You can.

When I left my husband he would send me articles and videos titled “how selfish white women are ruining the American family”. While I never read or watched them, I feel like the title gave the gist away.
And because I hear this phrase a lot, “I don’t want to break up my family” or “we stay together for the kids”.
Let me share this.
I became the Mother I truly wanted to be WHEN I left my marriage.
I have yet to meet a man or woman who decided to end their marriage to mess up their kids.
Many of the women I’ve worked with have stayed long past the expiration date and tried anything to make the marriage work. And sometimes, it just doesn’t. Sometimes the best thing to do is leave.
That being said, I am pro-marriage and believe that if two people can work it out, get it.
I left after I had exhausted every hope and attempt. I wish I’d left sooner.
It would have been better for all of us.
Being selfish became an insult to women, because as women we are encouraged and even trained to be selfless. Self abandonment is praised as being good, valuable and a solid woman.
It’s also a recipe for resentment, rage, and crippling self doubt.
Finding your way through a separation or divorce is a sacred time. It’s a time when you can leverage your experience to step into the woman you sense under the noise. It’s a time that is powerful and because there is chaos it is a time when you can really create change and direct your life how you desire, if you can really feel your desire.
Part of the work I do with clients is lead them into their desire, their knowing. Reacquaint themselves with the depth of their being and let that holy aspect lead.

Good girl is a self abandonment pattern that will wreak havoc in your relationships. How to get well?

What differentiates me from a therapist?

I recently found a journal from 5th grade. In it, I was explicit in my knowing that I would be a therapist. I wrote of the dynamics between men and women and how I wanted to figure it out and help people understand one another better. I was 10.
After high school, I opted instead to join a cult and move to Hawaii by myself. Because when you’re raised by wild parents who share their drug stories, hang out with musicians and generally checked every box available for a teenage girl looking to rebel, well, I had to get creative. And for my anti-religious parents, a christian orthodox cult really hit the spot.
It didn’t last long, as an elder arrived in my life and gave me the direction and support I longed for. I moved to Kauai to study with her, and shared my desire with her to become a therapist. She smiled wisely at me, and shook her head as she told me she didn’t think that path was for me.
It was then I encountered breath work. I returned to California to immerse myself in trainings. I was a sponge. I gathered all the tools to me. I started seeing clients at 21.
I look back at that now, and am amazed at my courage and audacity.
Skip some chapters and at the end of my 20’s I just wanted to get a degree and become a therapist.
See, nothing about my life has been normal. Not my parents, not how much I moved around, or the experiences I’d lived through.
I craved normal.
I just wanted to be a normal lady who was a therapist.
Which was my resistance to my own wisdom. I am uniquely skilled in adapting trauma into free energy. I am gifted in taking mundane experiences and shaping them into portals of transformation.

I see the truth. I always have.
I remember being in fourth grade, home with the chickenpox. My mom bundled me up and took me to one of her AA meetings so I could see a man she was interested in. She wanted my read. She knew I had the pulse. She didn’t always listen-but she almost always asked.
Seeing what’s true has made me an agitator.
My dad and I were once best friends. Deeply close. We talked almost every day. He was my ally, my confidant, my dear friend. So when he moved in with a woman and began calling me, crying, afraid- telling me she was threatening to make him leave after he’d given up his assets, that she was verbally abusive and cruel, I spoke up.
I asked questions. I asked her what was really going on. I asked how there could be more ease, less manipulation, more honesty.
She didn’t like that. Or me.
She took full control. She cut me out of his life. She barred my children from their grandfather. She told the rest of my family lies about things I had supposedly said or done—none of them true. My father was sick then, getting sicker. As his life was nearing its end, I found a way to see him.
The last time I saw my dad was a thirty minute visit, supervised by her lawyer. He cried and begged for more time with me. She screamed through the phone so loudly I could hear her as I sat beside my dying father.
He told me I was a miracle. That I was the best thing that had ever happened to him. He said everything I truly needed to hear. I left believing that if I followed her rules, if I played along, she would soften. I couldn’t yet imagine someone being cruel enough to keep a dying man and his daughter apart.
After that visit, he texted me. He said he hadn’t realized someone had blocked me on his phone. He asked for pictures of my sons; his grandsons.
That was the last message I ever received from him.
His nurse later told me his wife usually kept his phone from him. I had grossly underestimated her.
I never saw my father again. He never saw me or his grandsons again.

Love will be the harder thing much of the time.

It is love that says, go ahead…be bigger, softer and even more soft.

It is love that says yes to opening and communicating.

It is love that will make authentic boundaries, saying no thank you.

It is love that will open the door to walk away after all the aforementioned have been attempted.

Look at all that love does.

You know what love does not do?

Cancel someone.

Love does not callously walk away and pretend other does not exist.

Fear does.

Fear hides away behind pride and righteousness.

Fear justifies poor behavior.

When you kneel at the altar of fear, you are a coward.

When you kneel at the altar of love, you are a warrior.

I have never understood cowardice, and so I have looked foolish much of my life
standing alone at the altar of love until I found all the brave warriors.

But, you know what I discovered?   Fools live the best lives.

Leaving my marriage made me a better Mother.
I get to focus on my kids, and not on trying to be the thing he wanted, not trying to riddle out what was going on with him and attempting fix it.
My energy is fluid now.
Feeding me and my kids.
I remembered how to have fun, to laugh, play and enjoy myself. Much of my marriage was spent trying to avoid confrontation or a fight. And it rarely worked.
While I value marriage as a container, mine was not a healthy or positive fit for me, which meant it wasn’t for my children either. Momma sets the tone. And a depleted, nervous and fearful tone was not the vibe I wanted for us.
I left.
Doing the right thing is sometimes the harder thing.
It’s been 5 years and I am proud of what I’ve created, but mostly, who I have become.
Days like today remind me again of how grateful I am for the me 5 years ago that walked away even while she was terrified.  I get to be who I am now because of her.

It took me years to work up the courage and faith to leave my marriage.

To know that I wasn’t giving up or quitting, that I had given it all I had and was in a violently unhealthy marriage and needed to go.
I left.
And for the first year I was both a mess and the best I’d been in years.
It took me a solid year of falling apart to become whole again (iykyk) and another year to become the woman I’d felt pushing against the cage of my marriage.
Over that first year I became the woman I had longed to be.
I mothered from a better place and enjoyed my kids, I became happy.

I was on steroids for 10 days and here is what I learned:
The power of synthetic overdrive. The relentless push of synthetic and how it has no regard for the organic body underneath.
The first day I was on them my older son was home sick, by the end of the day he said “Mom, you haven’t sat down once.”
He was right. I had been moving nonstop.
When he said that, I paused and took a moment to actually feel my body. It required real focus to feel what was happening under the frenetic stream of go-go-go.
Underneath the pushing momentum, I was exhausted, physically exhausted.
And yet, I could not rest.
I had to force myself into bed. I barely slept for the first 4 days.
It hit me that many humans are on this synthetic overdrive. Much of our population are on medication, most of the medications are designed to disconnect and not feel what is happening in your own body.
On steroids, I felt this alignment with technology (which is not my usual jam) I wanted to have my phone constantly. The foods I wanted were outside of my normal range, I wanted hyper processed foods and sugar. Fuel for the synthetic, not nourishment from my body.
It was painful.
I felt disconnected, lonely, and symptoms of depression emerged.
Dark thoughts crept in, feeding this sense of separation.
I share this because with the onslaught of AI and the rapid acceleration of tech, true felt connection is VITAL.
The ability to drop into organic soft bodies and feel what is here will become paramount for any kind of healthy relationship, or to simply feel some peace and wholeness.
Your body is not synthetic.
Your aliveness is not programmable.

The Virgin Archetype is the woman who knows herself.  She is sovereign, trusts her inner compass, and feels truth in her own body.
She is untouchable not because she’s pure, but because she is rooted, solid in herself, a creator with dominion over her own inner realm.
She moves to her own rhythm, in step with the knowing that presses against her bones and guides her relentlessly.
To honor this archetype is to honor the Divine Feminine.
And yet, so many of us have lost touch with this deep knowing. Lost the ability to track desire as the holy grail of the soul’s calling. Lost the feeling of pleasure with no agenda, no purpose other than the fullness of pleasure itself.

Eleven years ago I became a Momma. And while I can still feel the soft fuzz covering his head, and almost smell the fresh baby newness of him, he is not a baby.
He is tall and strong and smart, kind, funny and brooding.  For his birthday he wants to eat sushi and hang out in a book store. Genetics are real.
Every day I am grateful to be his Momma. Every day I am grateful that I have become the woman I am because of being a Momma. The stretching, opening, growing that must happen has been the greatest gift of my life.
I’m happy to be celebrating him today, I am a very proud Momma.

I got poison oak so badly I couldn’t move much, eat or drink. Yes, I went to the doctors and am on the mend.
But, while I lay prone in bed, I felt this thick heaviness on my heart.
When I’m taken down like this, I assume there is something under it, a purpose.
I felt heavy, loaded with a sense of failure and a hearty dose of grief.
Clearly, this isn’t just about being laid up, so what is going on?
I let myself get wide, so I could hold whatever was coming up.
Waves of unworthiness, a sense of being a failure, with a bottom line of, I’m just broken.
I felt the emotion layered into these beliefs. Beliefs I’d been taught as a child.
I felt the ache.
I didn’t rush through it, and I did not wallow.
I felt it all the way through.
And prayed that the fiery rash in my skin could burn this up with me.
I kept praying, and there was a clear end of the heaviness, I quickly felt lighter and clarity dawned and I knew I needed to go to the doctors, where I received wonderful treatment.
Last night as I lay in bed after all this, I wrote about all the ways I am grateful for me.
For who I am, the qualities, values and devotion I hold.
For the way I love, the way I AM love.
And today, memories of my childhood returned, the good ones. How my mom would lay a tablecloth on the living room floor and serve roasted chicken and potatoes while we watched a movie. How her style always stunned me. How hard she worked to provide for us.
Here’s the funny thing about beliefs: we tend to gravitate toward the dark stuff. The pain. The hardness. And there’s purpose in that, because when we move pain all the way through, we open space for beauty to rise. (Continued below in comments)

When I’m punishing myself to accomplish something, or holding an exacting gaze upon anything I’ve created.
It’s not my parents, or my partner or even my own kids I’m striving to impress.
It’s her. My own little version of me. She lived through so much and became a bad ass before she ever got to be a full kid.
For her, I aim to be kinder and more gentle with me.
Forgiving myself for what I didn’t know or couldn’t do.
Lightening my own load so that I may live in the lighthearted way she dreamed of.
This is what doing the work does.

Hi, I’m Sierra.
I’ve been a rebel for most of my life. So when I was told that the trauma I survived was too big to ever fully heal, I did the best thing I could: I told them to fuck off. I rebelled. I experimented. I explored. I learned.
I apprenticed for years with an extraordinary woman, studying breathwork, pattern and belief shifting, and the art of deep transformation.
Later, I went rogue. I lived wildly and I learned from life itself.

Embrace your own dark past, for there are treasures there.
This morning I was on a walk. It was cold, and I could see my breath.
The sunlight pierced in thin blades through the canopy of oaks while my feet hit a soft cadence on the packed earthen trail.
A primary motivation to walk this morning was the pain in my hips. I have old injuries that have nestled and demand I care for myself in very specific ways.
I felt the tremendous gift of these injuries as I walked in the early morning light. The ways they’ve pushed me into depths of character as well as physical practice. I have mourned and raged about them.
And yet, I can receive them as the Masters Degree they are.
I am the woman I am today because of all the life I’ve lived. And as I’ve allowed the darker bits to alchemize through feeling the pain there, I have received the wisdom, the profound beauty of my souls choice to alchemize really difficult situations.
Ultimately, it is all energy. When I can let go of the story of victimhood, and feel the actual pain frozen in there, I free the energy, I become free.
Liberation is available.
